HOCKEY HOMEWORK

COACH MIKE'S 3X3 MAGIC FORMULA

Remember this from the other day before practice? If not here's a reminder....

On offense we try to create the WHATs, and on defense we take the WHATs away from our opponents. HOW we do it is determined by WHERE we and our teammates are on the ice. In all situations we must read the situation and react!

     WHAT?                                 HOW?                        WHERE?
Time and Space                Speed and Quickness         Offensive Zone
Angles and Lanes               Strength and Power          Neutral Zone
Support/ Help                    Deception and Trickery      Defensive Zone

Step 1: Watch the two video's below, "Driving Wide Like McDavid" and "Offensive attacks with high support"

Step2: Find at least two examples of how the 3x3 formula is being applied in the videos. For example,  Smitty creates time and space for herself in the neutral zone by using speed when she blah,blah,blah..... (Smitty is not in the videos 😃).

Step3: Submit your detailed examples online as a comment at the bottom of this post, or bring your Hockey Homework to practice on Feb 21st and hand it in to the coaches.

Thanks,
Coach Mike

1)McDavid applies the 3x3 formula when driving to the net in the offensive zone. He uses crossovers with speed and quickness to create time and space. He also uses strength and power when he uses his leg to shield the puck from the defense.

2)In the second video, the forward creates time and space in the offensive zone by going straight at the defense to create a good drop pass. He uses speed and a little bit of trickery.

    3) In the 2nd video, the player on pittsburgh uses deception and trickery in the offensive zone by reading that the defense are backing up a lot. He creates angles and lanes for passing and a very good scoring oppurtunity.

    1) I think Mcdavid applies the 3x3 formula when he creates time and space by going inside the red dots as explained in the video because he gives himself options instead of angling himself off. He also uses his many crossovers to create speed to carry him and to shield the puck to the front of the net.

    2) I think that the second video uses a smart technique of the drop pass. I really found it interesting how they were patient and didnt just scramble. They used the 3x3 when he created time and space with the drop pass. Also when Pittsburgh is coming down on the Ottawa senators they use trickery when they are going a bit slower to lure the sens in and then they spread the play out.

  3. i found that McDavid uses the magic formula when he used his speed to drive around the defenseman in the offensive zone to create space to give a pass in front of the net.

  4. in the second video one of the pittsburge players used deception and trickery and stopped down in the hash marks of the offensive zone to create a lane and angle to give a pass up to a defenseman at the point for a shot on net.

  5. McDavid was using the 3x3 formula as he entered the offensive zone and creating space and time for himself, he used the Speed and Quickness going towards the boards and using crossovers for speed. He also used strength and Power as he angled himself towards the net and went through the defensemen to create a scoring chance.

  7. in the second video what I find a little bit tricky is that the player goes straight at full speed toward the defencemen as if they were going to make a move but the player is in a perfect position for a drop pass to a player that is sneaking in behind them. And when the Pittsburgh player was in a 1 on 1 he had a perfect passing opportunity because he was riding the play and because he kind of was watching how the defencemen was going to back up and when he did the Pittsburgh player made his move and passed through the defence and right onto his players stick and he scored.
